Playing career
Ijaz Butt was born in 1938 in Sialkot, Punjab. On 16 January 1956, while playing for Pakistan Universities, he made his first-class debut against a visiting Marylebone Cricket Club squad. Batting at three, he hit 35 and 97, falling three short of a debut century courtesy to Billy Sutcliffe’s bowling and Ken Barrington’s catching hands. The game finished in a tie. A month later, he faced the MCC again, this time for Punjab, and scored 43 and 18, but the MCC won by an innings and 29 runs.
Butt went on to have a great winter season in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, hitting 225 runs at 56.25, including a maiden century of 147 runs. He immediately went the West Indies, but only played one first-class match before returning to the 1958/59 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, where he had a less successful second season, scoring 73 runs in three matches at 24.33, falling short of the 50-run mark. Despite this, he was called up to the Test squad for the home series against the West Indies.
2010 England tour
The England squad later made their demand for an apology official in a letter to Butt, threatening legal action if their request was not met. Butt came in London in late September, swearing not to withdraw his words ahead of a meeting with the lawyers of three suspended Pakistan players; however, he later modified his position and retracted his statement.
Nonetheless, he was summoned by the PCB for an explanation, amid speculation that his position as chairman was in jeopardy. At a meeting in Dubai, the ICC board of directors debated dismissing him if he refused to embrace new anti-corruption measures.
Following the conclusion of his three-year term as PCB Chairman in October 2011, he was succeeded by Zaka Ashraf.
